SAD NEWS: I have today confirmed, with a family member, recent rumours of the death of Donald 'Brian' T. Down, aged 81. Brian and I were both in the class which started at Sexey's in 1949 and left school in 1954. He was a quiet but popular member of the class and is remembered fondly by most. Brian died on 7th June as a result of multiple chronic illnesses and the funeral has already taken place. There are no plans for a Memorial Service. I last spoke to Brian in 2O09 when he was living in France, but he was unable to return to attend the '49 Class reunion held in 2010. He had apparently returned to the UK a couple of years back and was living at Lower Weare. Brian was pre-deceased by his older sister Nanette, who was also an Old Sexonian. RIP old friend.

Needless to say we find ourselved in strange times as we all look to avoid this horrible virus which has taken the life of at least one of our number - RIP Nita.Let's hope that the nightmare will quickly end so we can resume our lives with some normality. Stay safe, everyone. Martyn

CORRECTION: Further to my posting below concerning the sad news regarding Nita Brown (nee Parker), it has come to my notice that neither of Nita’s sons has been a victim of the coronavirus and I am pleased to confirm that both of them are well. However, Nita’s father(aged 94), was admitted to hospital with Nita and has died. Happily, Nita’s husband (Ron Brown) has now recovered from the virus. I have today apologised to Mr Brown personally for MY error and any stress this may have caused. I also apologise to any Old Sexonian who read the SAD NEWS notice if the error has caused any stress. SAD NEWS – I have been advised by several Old Sexonians with Burnham-on-Sea connections that Nita Brown (nee Parker) became a victim of the coronavirus on Saturday 4th April. Both Nita and one of her sons had been admitted to hospital and Nita was pre-deceased by her son. I understand that Nita’s husband has now been diagnosed positive too. This is a really awful family tragedy. Nita joined Sexey’s in September 1964 and left school in July 1971 and had many friends in the Burnham area. With the UK daily death toll now touching one thousand, none of us should need reminding how dangerous this killer virus really is. Adhere to the rules Old Sexonians, take sensible precautions and stay safe!!! RIP Nita.

SAD NEWS – The death has been announced of George J. (‘John’) Barrow, aged 86, on 29th March, 2020 at Bedford, Bedfordshire. John started at Sexey’s in October 1945 and was a boarder throughout his time at school. He left school in July 1950. There are photographs of John on the website at GIG4/41 & 42 and he is in a ‘45 Class group photo at GIG4/46 and a boy boarders group photo at GIG4/48. Whilst natural causes may well have been the cause of death, it has not been possible to confirm this at the present time. RIP John.

GREETINGS FROM THE ANTIPODES: I've received an email from Brian Fry advising that John Thompson, widower of the late Margaret Field (Thompson), died just over a year ago. Brian and Margaret lived at Brent Knoll and were both in the '45 Class (1945 - 1950). Brian lives at Invercargill, New Zealand, which is at the southern end of South Island, virtually the last landfall travelling to Antarctica. He sends best wishes for the New Year to all Old Sexonians, particularly those who remember him.JKG

Dear Old Sexonian, As in previous years, Martyn and I send seasonal best wishes to all Old Sexonians for a happy and peaceful Christmas and good health throughout 2020. We doubt that each and every Old Sexonian finds a place in Heaven when they leave this world, but we’re keeping our fingers crossed. Visiting the Old Sexonians website from time to time won’t guarantee you a place in heaven either, but it might help. Here’s a problem one Old Sexonian experienced recently. She was not the first Blonde to go to heaven, but she was no ordinary Blonde. She had passed the 11+ examination in the 1940s and had been a pupil at Sexey’s, Blackford. She succeeded in life because of her instinctive ability to re-assemble logic and reasoning. However, the day she arrived in heaven was no ordinary day. St Peter explained “Heaven is suffering from an overload of Godly Souls recently and we have been forced to introduce an Entrance Exam for new arrivals to ease the burden of Heavenly Arrivals”. “That’s cool”, said the Blonde,” What does the exam consist of?” “Just three questions”, said St Peter. “Which are?”, enquired the Old Sexonian. “The first,” said St Peter, “is, which two days of the week start with the letter ’T’? “The second is ‘How many seconds are there in a year?” The third is “What was the name of the swagman in Waltzing Matilda?” “Now,” said St Peter, “Go away and think about these questions and when I call upon you, I shall expect you to have the answers for me.” So the Blonde went away and gave those three questions considerable thought”. ............................. (I expect you are doing the same right now?). The following morning St Peter called and asked if she had considered the questions, to which she replied, “I have.” “Well then.” said St Peter, “Which two days of the week start with the letter ‘T’?” The Blonde replied confidently, “Today and Tomorrow”. St Peter pondered this answer for a few minutes and decided that her answer could indeed be applied to the question. “Well then, could I have your answer to the second question – how many seconds in a year?” The Blonde replied “Twelve”. “Only twelve?” exclaimed St Peter, “How did you arrive at that figure?” “Easy” said the blonde, “there’s the second of January, the second of February, right through to the second of December, giving a total of twelve seconds.” St Peter looked at the Blonde and said “I need some time to consider your answer before I can give you a decision” and walked away shaking his head. A short time later St Peter returned and said, “I’ll allow the answer to stand, but you need to get the third and final question absolutely correct to be allowed into Heaven. Now, can you tell me the name of the swagman in Waltzing Matilda?” The Blonde replied, “It’s Andy.” “Andy??” “Yes, Andy”, said the Blonde. This totally floored St Peter, and he paced this way and that, deliberating her answer. Finally, he could not stand the suspense any longer and asked, “How in God’s name did you arrive at THAT answer?” “Easy” said the Blonde, “Andy sat, Andy watched, Andy waited ‘til his billy boiled!” (............ you’re singing it now, aren’t you?) ***************************************************************** Old Sexonians THREE – St Peter NIL .......... and yet another Old Sexonians entered Heaven. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This is YOUR website folks! It exists largely thanks to your contributions of old school photographs and memorabilia, news of Old Sexonians, your personal recollections of being a pupil or member of staff; and to facilitate requests from organisers of class reunions in tracing former classmates. Such contributions or requests are always welcome. If you wish to trace or make contact with a former classmate(s) or friend(s) from your school days or to organise a class reunion, give John a try on grant_273@hotmail.com and he’ll do his best to assist. For all Old Sexonians who have attended the Brent House Reunion over the past 5 years, the main organisers, Cynthia and Nigel Dean, have decided that the 2019 event will be the last one they organise. They have done a great job over the past 5 years and all the events have been, well-run, enjoyable occasions - many thanks for all your hard work Cynthia and Nigel. Needless to say we are now looking for a new organiser/s to take over - is that person you? If you are interested you can contact Cynthia and Nigel at nandcdean@madasafish.com and they will give you further details. Inevitably,if new organisers cannot be found then I'm afraid the event will fold which would be a great shame. Martyn

My memory of Mr Moore was firstly, I always thought his first name was Basil! He told wonderful stories to help us remember the very 'logical' Latin language. Such as the family members who "missed the bus" and did not get their 'expected' Genitive endings......Father, brother, old man, young man, dog......I am sure I missed someone. But, I expect to be corrected. His sense of humor, intelligence, story telling. Who didn't love it as we struggled with translating the Aeneid "Arma virumque Cano. Troiae qui primes ab oris". He would sense the effects of post prandial stupor and would tell us to close our books for a story. His performance as The Lord High Executioner in "The Mikado" (I carried one of the axes). I would love my thanks to go to him as a great role model. If others have stories please share.

Have recently discovered the goodies on this website. Left school at 16 but I did get to University - having done Open University courses when our two daughters were young, my 3.5 credits were accepted as A-level equivalents and I went to Liverpool University. Graduating with a 2.1 (Computational & Statistical Science) I joined United Biscuits as a programmer in Liverpool. We lived in St. Helens, Clive worked for IBM in Manchester. Worked my way up to Project Manager and was still with UB when we moved to South Ascot. I was running UB's Datashop. Then joined the Post Office working on the TV Licensing System. Retired in 2002, had my cataracts replaced, and have never been more busy in my life! 3 grandchildren, a keen amateur photographer, gardener, walker (just about given up jogging - body complaining) and regularly try new recipes. If you want to contact me I am cpar2@talktalk.net. I hope to get to the 2016 reunion - first Monday in July, I believe. Would love to meet up with old pals.

Members may be interested to know that I have just written and published a book on Hugh Sexey. It sets him in the context of his times and shows that he was typical of ambitious young men of the Elizabethan age: his move to London, the way he made fortune by being in the right place at the right time; his sometimes dubious business practices; and his charitable activities. The book aims to dispel some of the myths and traditions surrounding him: he never came from Bristol but was Bruton born and bred; his second marriage was not a disaster but enhanced his social status; and he was never an Auditor to Queen Elizabeth I but just to James I. The book is entitled "The Life and Times of Hugh Sexey of Bruton: Auditor to James I."

Very sad news. Tim was in the year above. I remember Tim played some mixed hockey with some of our form. This was great fun, if you were happy to risk a rapped ankle from the girls!. He was very popular and had, was or was going to study Art and Architecture.

I know that every one of my old class (1964-71)will be greatly saddened to hear of the recent death of Tim Arlidge. Tim passed away on January 8th after suffering a respiratory illness. Whilst living at Burnham on Sea Tim joined the class, along with quite a large number of other pupils, at the start of the lower sixth. Tim was fun, highly likeable and intelligent and represented the school on the sports field. He went on to set up a business making bespoke furniture. Sincere condolences to family and friends. Latest news- apparently 97% of kidney tumours are malignant - I was lucky in that the tumours were benign - I am now known as Mr Three Percent. They still had to be removed because their presence was affecting the performance of the kidney and could have caused problems if left to grow. Thanks to all those people who have sent me good wishes etc.

JANE BAILEY. Are you able to assist with tracing Jane, please. She joined Sexey's in 1953 from 'The Chestnuts' School at Winscombe. She lived on the A38 at Churchill/Lower Langford and travelled to school on the Cheddar school brake. Jane was a member of the Class of 1953 to 1958. What became of her after she left school? Did she have any siblings? Who did she marry? Were is she now? Was she close to anyone who might know more about her? Any information or clues to grant_273@hotmail.com, please.

The late DAPHNE CHEDZOY. Daphne was in the Class of 1959 to 1964. In 1967 she married Alan Bell. Their son Stephen Paul Bell was born in 1970 and their second son Adrian Lee Bell was born in 1974. Sadly Daphne died in 1990 in the Weymouth area. Does anyone know where Daphne was buried or cremated, please? Replies to grant_273@hotmail.com, please

Was he close to anyone who might know more about him? Any information or clues to grant_273@hotmail.com please.

When I had my 75th birthday at the end of June one of the presents that I received from the Health Service was a free full medical check-up. The results of this discovered tumours in my right kidney - this was removed on Monday 3 Nov. The speedy recovery is because the removal was carried out using 'keyhole' surgery. Five days in recovery ward and home on Friday afternoon. Still feeling a bit sore but also feeling very thankful that I accepted the offer of a free full medical inspection.

After a few years working in Burnham on Sea as an Estate Agent I moved back to London to join the Metropolitan Police. I spent 30 years policing and then another 15 years working for a firm of Solicitors. I have lived in Dorking, Surrey for the past 28 years and have 3 children and 3 grandchildren.

Hello folks I am trying to trace my Dad's relatives in the area. His name was Ambrose (Bubbles) Blacker. His family use to run the Sexeys Arms pub many years ago and I have some old photos I could share with you. I recognise some familiar names in your members - Champney and Duckett. We used to holiday nearly every summer in Blackford - we would stay with the Champneys and my Dad's 'adopted' aunt was Annie Duckett who used to be a caretaker and bell ringer at the village church. Our cousins owned a farm - the Fear family (only remember Julie Fear). Can anyone help me make contact? I would really love to catch up with new family and friends. Kind Regards. For Ann Weller. I do research for the OS website and have identified a 'Vera M. Hatton' born in 1932 at Southwark in South East London. I've traced her to an address in Sussex but have not contacted her. Her age suggests that she would have been in the 'Class of 1943 to 1948'; however, none of the 45 already identifified in that class have mentioned a Vera May Hatton previously. Please email me on grant_273@hotmail.com for more information. If you are an Old Sexonian would you please include your maiden name. Kind regards - John K. Grant.

I thought it may be of interest to know that my mother Mary Rose Dodge mentioned in 1932 at the school is still alive at 92 years. I wonder if any classmates from that era are also alive?

Over the last few weeks since I have been helping Mike Cooke with identifying girls on the sports images, I have been thinking about my sporting experiences at Sexey's. I was really fortunate to have been at school when Mrs Baartlett became the P.E teacher. She spotted the natural ability that I had and encouraged, cajoled and pushed me to develop that talent. She gave up a lot of after school time to encourage those of us that were interested and who wanted to get better at athletics. She booked me on to courses , she contacted an ex England hurdler , Rev.Michael Pennington, to come to coach us and she even took me to Millfield School to train.I was very fortunate and will always be grateful to her for her efforts. She opened up the possibility of doing something other than leaving school at fifth form level . It also meant I travelled to many places for athletic meetings , when the furthest I had been before was W.S. Mare! So, it has brought back good memories for me and I am enjoying delving into the old photographs . Audrey

Hi Audrey, Sorry I omitted greeting, and also as my opening words below could've sounded quite rude - well, I trust it's understood that by "amazing" I meant fantastic, and enviable... Peter

Wow that's amazing - that you and Elizabeth are still close friends - well, to me it would be, I guess...these past 50 years (can it really be that?--no, surely only something like half-a-century?) I've moved almost that number of times (at present in Newcastle upon Tyne...oh and in that sort of electronic global village Facebook, if only to keep up with my daughter's doings [Gen aka Zombina of Zombina & The Skeletones])... Please do remember me to Elizabeth...after all, we did sit next to each other oh hundreds of times for lunch [wasn't that strange though!?--that food...esp the rubbery meat, seemed cooked far away and long ago...on t'other hand the fruit crumbles were okay, and if I'm right in believing it was in E.R.'s gift to dish out seconds, I hope and trust I was favoured now and again!...))) Hello Peter, yes , you are the one I was thinking of. You are also right about the mis-naming of the 'gondoliers' image in the memories of the 1960's. Must get that changed. Liz Rose who is still one of my closest friends, had left school by then , I think and had gone to do a foundation Arts Course at Taunton.I saw her a couple of weeks ago when I did a return visit to Somerset to see family, she is still as lovely as ever. Good to hear from you , Audrey

Hallo Audrey... Great to have your response. In Gall 2 19/50, I'm in the back row furthest right (as you look at it...between Bob Ford and John Sheldon), apparently wearing a bit of a weary mug through awkwardness at being posed...also appearing as a judge (which came as a complete surprise) in the same production, snap incl in the "Memories of the 60s" section (where you are wrongly named, I think...surely that is you sitting fourth from the right on the front row?) Though somewhat awkward and "out of it" in many ways, I certainly enjoyed being being part of that production... It seems that most of the people I named in my first message were in it... Also, I recall my partner Hilary Freckingham who lived in Wedmore, and that great lead singer Susan Brookes, amongst others (Peter Lee unforgettable, of course)...but I had thought your friend Elizabeth Rose (fine artist, and my lunch-table chief) was one of the cast, but couldn't see her in either photo... I wonder if any of us from that romp are still treading the boards while warbling whimsical ditties!?... Warm wishes, Peter

What warm, nostalgic memories from reading several of the contributions below...those from Audrey (Croker) Morgan, Bob Ford and Bob Brooks, and of other students (well alright- Pupils...is what we used to be called!) mentioned in their messages - Ian Hart, John Sheldon, Geoff Parsons, John Woodward, Edward Tincknell, Bruce Purvis, Richard Overy, Roger Hooper...all in the same year/form as me -4th- and 5th-alpha and then Lower Sixth (I arrived at the school late, in 1961, and left early, Easter '64 [nothing personal...in fact of the five schools I attended post-11+ Sexey's by far my favourite]... Some stray recollections - Audrey adorable in "The Gondoliers" (of which I was one, albeit a bit backward with the signorine); with Bob Ford at a record-shop in Bristol, listening to "Not Fade Away", which I think I then heard at his place (not far from dear old Joe Swallow's, our rather eccentric Biology master); Geoff Parsons, my 4th-form desk-mate in Mr Elkins' classroom leaning across to copy chunks of my none-too-reliable History essays, then felling mercilessly the frail willow I was on the rugby field; Ian Hart's golden presence behind the counter in his parents' Wedmore newsagents; plucky John Woodward preparing to cycle back to Porlock for a half-term, his steed having those far-from-suitable-for-distance "cow-horn" handlebars; John Sheldon's amazing paintings (he and I, both doing Biology and Chemistry, cut a R.E. class each week to do Art "O"-level); Roger Hooper's broad grins and oh-so-easy winning of cross-country runs; the unmistakeable electricity of that group of intellectuals in our year, which included John S, Bruce Purvis, and Richard Overy (my desk-mate for two terms of the Lower Sixth before I left)...many other faces, voices, oh and wafts of hay meadows and the peat levels and rayballing for eels and all those grass-snakes, and dear old Reggie and Marion Stitch our neighbours when we rented (for £5 a week, wretched battery-hens thrown in!...now owned by one C. Jagger, I gather) Yew Tree Farm, Mudgley, where my father (a teacher at Wedmore, then Cheddar...thus we latterly occupied the Wedmore schoolhouse) removed us to all the way from the deep-south suburb of Warlingham. I keep meaning to write a longer piece about those truly idyllic Somerset seasons, but to some extent put it off for fear of ruining the re-living of it in the imagination... Ah well, someday maybe! Meanwhile, I'd love to hear from any of the above who remember me, and from others I recall fondly, not yet mentioned - as well as of teachers, incl. our (John Sheldon and my group's) Art tutor, who used to roar through Wedmore in a Jowett Javelin while we waited for the coach; Mr Moore, entertaining French and Latin teacher; Mr Churchyard, Chemistry and Music wallah (whose father took over from us the tenancy of Yew Tree Farm, oddly enough)... SAD NEWS In November 2012, whilst researching the 'Class of 1953 to 1958', I traced and spoke to Annette, the daughter of Pauline Newby, who originated from the Burnham/Highbridge area and was now residing in Wandsworth, South London. At that time, Pauline was too ill to speak to me; so I agreed to the family's request to wait until Pauline was well enough to speak to me direct. Sadly, Annette has just advised me that her Mum died on 14th April 2013. Happy Birthday, website - 5 years old today!! This past year has been a really good one with lots of new pics on show and new people finding the website. Sadly, though, a number of Old Sexonians, staff and pupils alike have said their final 'farewells'. Recently, the Home Page picture has been changed to one that shows pupils, staff and the Grammar School sign - very iconic and a big improvement. With regards to other additions I'm hoping that in the coming month you will, once again, be able to hear the Sexeys's School orchestra of the 1960's playing a few pieces - watch this space! I would like to thank all of you that have sent in pictures and memories over the past year and particular thanks must go to John Grant for the amount of work that he's done behind the scenes. I hope you all continue to enjoy the website over the coming year. Martyn

Info for Colin Adams. Geoff Parsons who was a good friend at school and after died in his early fifties while playing rugby. Bob Salway was a class in front of me, Roger and Geoff. I played a lot of football with him in and out of school and we were often mistaken for brothers both being small in stature with lots of freckles. He is now retired and living in Axbridge.

Right first time Bob - I don't remember you at all but being that bit older, I can lay claim to senile decay! I came from Cheddar along with 'Stu' Senior as did Rodger. I recall a Geoff Parsons and another lad Salway who I think was in the same year as Rodger. Don't feel bad about not remembering me - so few do that I am beginning to wonder if I ever went to Sexeys! but for the photo of the School Athletics Team where I appear (Roger and Geoff Parsons both appear in that as well). Looking through some of the 'sporting' photographs it reminded me of what a trend setter Adrian 'Edward' Ellis was at the time. He always wore the back of his soccer shirt collar turned up way before Eric Cantona ever did.

Colin Adams Posted:Apr 22, 2013 - 16:40:38

For Colin Adams. Don't remember you at all Colin and I'm sure you return the compliment! Just to say that I remember Roger Hooper very well we were in the same Alpha class. He was an exceptional runner at any distance but also a more than decent footballer so to hear that he scored a goal intentionally with his knee is no surprise. A really good guy too. I hope he's enjoying his long retirement!

Bob Brooks Posted:Apr 17, 2013 - 06:21:16

I recently came across a communication from Frank Mansfield dated Jun 07, last year. The name I remember but cannot put a face to at the moment, I think I was two Forms above. Frank, you mention the activities of one fellow reprobate Roger Hooper. Roger spent all his career as a Design Engineer at Westland Helicopters, Weston super Mare until around ten years or so ago when he took early retirement. I worked with Roger on Ground Support Equipment Group in the Mid seventies and he was often bringing a smile to our faces with his humour - he often used to wear a piece of Goatskin Rug down his shirt front - as if he was not hairy enough. Roger had very firm religious beliefs and we used to fight amongst ourselves to get the same holiday weeks as himself as he always enjoyed perfect weather which convinced us that there must be something in it. I used to run a Youth Soccer Club in Weston and the oldest group of players eventually moved up into the mens Divisions. We had a top of the table clash one Saturday and were short of players and contrary to his level of intelligence, Roger agreed to make up the numbers despite not having played seriously for a couple of years. With the scores level at a late stage of the game, the ball rocketed across the goal mouth directly at Roger. He instantly realised that it was too low for his head and too high to get his foot to it without tearing some hither-too unused muscles. The end result was the greatest Knee volley witnessed on a soccer pitch up into the roof of the net - they all count after all and for us it won the match. Roger was what I would describe as a really decent person and it was always a pleasure to share his company, unfortunately, I know not of his present circumstances. I also read a recollection from another Scholar of that era who had mixed views regarding the quality of teaching at Sexeys. I can only relate my own experiences and I certainly was not one of the 'favored' ones, quite the opposite with several Teachers, but I found myself having to transfer to Weston Grammar School part way through the fifth year and found them being taught what we had been given the year previously and the Teachers were really second rate there.

Bit of a long shot here, but you never know unless you try. I am seeking to contact another fellow musical reprobate who might have include in his life of misguided activities, being a Musician/vocalist in groups over the years. Since my days at Sexeys, this also has played a large part in my life, however, the group I have been a member of since 1990 (Niteshift) finds itself likely to have need a new lead vocalist in the not to distant future. We are based in the Weston/Burnham area and play music of the 60's and 70's, mainly harmony influenced. Our ages range from 55 to 68 and we play in a wide variety of venues including the Winter Gardens. If any like minded person out there would like to renew and enjoy his hobby once more then please drop me a line. The ability to stand up and face in the right direction would be advantageous Thanks Colin

Bob Ford. I remember you very well. Fifth form biology lessons with you and Cookie Hart, lower sixth maths of course and an all round good guy. Not forgetting of course the all conquering U15 football team and 4x100 relay teams where you were no3 and I was last man. Don't know why because you were faster than me but we were really good at baton changes. I only play football in my head as memories (mainly goals, fancy that!) these days unfortunately. Can't watch a game without twitching the kicking muscles and sometimes sliding across the carpet to tackle someone. I hope you're enjoying the US.

It is with great regret and sadness that I have to inform you of the death of Jenny Wylde.Jenny was a member of the class of '55 and worked tirelessly to ensure that her relative, John Rowland Hill, was added to the school's Roll of Honour (Sept 2012).Her picture at the 'unveiling' can be seen both in the 'History' section of the website and Gallery 5 of the general photos.I feel privileged to have met Jenny and to have played a small part in this - I know that Jenny thoroughly enjoyed the day which also involved speaking to many of the staff and pupils in the Hall as well as the reunion of her classmates at the Sexey's Arms. This is her obituary as it appeared in the Lincolnshire Echo on March 14th - Wylde Jennifer Denise, Former Superintendent Registrar of Births, Marriages and Deaths in Lincoln, Magistrate and Writer. Died peacefully at home after a short illness on Wednesday 6th March 2013. A loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. A Service of Thanksgiving will be held at All Saints Church, Coleby on Wednesday 20th March at 12.45pm followed by a private committal at Lincoln. Family flowers only please. Donations, if desired, to St Barnabas Hospice c/o Priestley & Cockett, Sunningdale Drive, Lincoln LN6 7UD (Thanks to John Grant for supplying this).May I send my sincere condolences to her husband, Andrew and the rest of her family and fiends at this difficult time. Thank you Martin for making the considerable commitment to organising this site. I stumbled on it by accident when I googled the name Henry Tomlinson. I had a sudden interest in finding out more about the man in a moment of post retirement introspection! So here's a bit of balance to the adulation. I was totally unaware of HT's background or even the behind the scenes workings at Sexeys. It has been interesting to read the accolades to his teaching abilities as my experience was not a good one. For reasons too complicated to explain I took A-level pure and applied maths rather than history and geography. At the end of year exams I got 0 for pure and 20 for applied. My friend John Woodward did much better with 4 for pure and also 20 for applied. Neither of us are stupid so I leave a question hanging. I realised there was absolutely no point in staying on at school as the teacher in my other subject, geography, was also hopeless so I left after the first term of Upper Sixth to join the Navy which I should have done when I was 15 but I got eight O-levels and drifted into 6th form. I was in the class of 58, one of an unprecedented contingent of six from Axbridge (Jane Salway, Elizabeth Lane, Paul Lawton, Colin Thorne and Richard Wiggs), totally bemused by all the fuss from family of going to Grammar school. I came top in a couple of subjects in first year (one of which was maths) but being debilitatingly shy I hated the attention and decided not to do that again. So I sank into middle achievement where it was more comfortable. Except for French at which I was hopeless due to the inadequacy of previous teachers and the requirement to actually speak it. Mr Packer was very kind in his appreciation of my effort but didn't actually make any effort on his part to help me overcome my stuttering shyness in speaking the language. I was not shy on the sports field though and it's been good looking at the football and athletic team photos, some of which I don't even remember. I never realised I was the smallest person in the football team! I remember playing with Tim Wellington, he was left half and I was right half, in the under thirteen Mid-Somerset team which won the Somerset cup against all odds. The under 15 school team too which won the Mid-Someset Cup undefeated. I was extremely disappointed not be in a cricket photo though. I hated cricket but was dragged into an after school game one evening against what was probably one of the best teams in Somerset. They batted first and scored a lot of runs, possibly hundreds. We were all out for 14 of which I scored ten!! What a star. I was in the team after that which I found very amusing. I have lived in NZ since '82 but am still in contact with friends from school, Colin Thorne, John Woodward, Max Wilby, Jane Salway and Bob Salway who I meet up with on my infrequent visits to England. When we meet the talk invariably turns to our experience at Sexey's and the agreement that the school was elitist, especially at sixth form level where if you were not interested in going on to university you definitely felt out of the loop. As with all institutions there are many good memories of fellow inmates though I have to say that because of my extreme reserve the circle is small. One memory though which has come to me recently is of Edward Tincknell producing perfect drawings of buses in general science classes. I think he did trains as well. I have read many glowing testimonials to various teachers on here; some I would agree with, many I would not. The teachers I enjoyed were: Pete Lee, Joe Swallow, Mrs Lambie, Ms Irons and Brian Elvins who I pissed off big time by not doing A-level history. Of the also-rans I would have to select Gordon Churchyard as last in the field. I remember a film a few years ago; "The History Boys", where a school in the North of England got a group of boys into Oxbridge, and what a great achievement that was. I also remember that a very small school in Somerset got four boys (Paul Lawton, Bruce Purvis, Clive Toomer and Richard Overy) into Oxbridge in 1965 but as yet no film. I'm not sure but there might have been another one. Mickey Hill? Knowing what I know now I can only reflect that Sexeys Blackford was run like a present day Olympic selection team: the best got the resource and the rest are the rest. But hey. It was a whole lot better than going to Cheddar Secondary Modern.

I have tried to leave a message before however it has proven unsuccessful, maybe this will be accepted. This should hopefully rectify some of the absence of info from the late 60's early 70's My father Alan Brooke was deputy Head at Sexey's from 1964 until its demise as a Grammar school when he joined the staff at K of W Chedder as Deputy Head, unfortunately he passed away in 1985 just following his well earned retirement. Both my sisters Joyce and Christine (head Girl) were at the school as was I, so our famiy involvement was from 1964-1974. Joyce who taught History in Reading is now retired and lives in Berkshire, Christine who taught Maths in Hinckley is also retired and lives in Leicestershire. Unfortunately being the youngster of the family with two children in further education I am still with my nose to the grindstone. If anyone who recognizes the name would like to contact us then please do so via my email account and I will pass the messages on. I also have quite a few speech day programs and school photos from our years at Sexey's plus associated newspaper items and odd articles from cubs etc. which may be of interest to some of you. these have come to light following my mother Violet Brooke passing away last year

Have really enjoyed reading the website. Not very much of our year 1966-72 on here think we must be a bit lazy at looking out old photos. I seem to have missed out on being in any sport photos which is a bit sad. No reunion photos of our year either from the Watchfield Inn. Think when I retire I will have to try and fill these gaps. Makes great reading. Very well done!

Sad to report that Leslie Puddy (of Mark) passed away peacefully on 21st November 2012 aged 75 years. Les and I were classmates for four years between 1949 and 1953. He was always Les Pavey's star pupil and was an expert on the lathe whilst most of us were still learning to handle saws and chisels properly. No doubt they are now happily reunited in another woodwork shed in another place. Funeral Service will take place a Taunton Deane Cremetorium on Monday 3rd December at 4pm (Enquiries to Bridgwater Funeral Services, tel: 01278 457755. Rest in Peace Les. Sad news has just come to my notice that Ronald James Hellier (of West Hay) passed away peacefully at home on 28th October 2012. Ron was at Sexey's from 1948 to 1953 and was the best football captain I ever played under. Ron's older brother Jimmie, who left Sexey's in 1943, died in 2011. Rest in peace Ron. John K. I too remember the building of the Library, and also the names of the day boys in my class.Butt Frost Keen Line Milne Nuttycombe Russett Sampson. Great days. I alo remember the purchase of the school kettle drums, and my bad playing of them. I now live in Guernsey so do not travel to the UK often. I do get a christmas card from Albert Frost every year. It's May 1st again which heralds the website's 4th birthday and I would like to thank all those who have contributed over the pastyear.Unfortunately, the rate of contributions over this period has slowed dramatically which in some ways is unsurprising as new schoolday pictures become harder to find. Similarly my own store of archive material has rapidly grown smaller and, sadly, this coming year will see me using up all the material I have in my possession. Surely, there must still be a lot of material out there particularly from the last decade of the Grammar's existence - if anything one would expect there to be more pictures and stories from this era than anywhere else but for some reason this still remains a rather weak area of the website so come on you 'youngsters', send your pictures and stories in so others can enjoy them and have a flavour about what the school's final years were like. On a positive note it's nice to see that the website has inspired a number of school reunions , I hope they continue to be held well into the future. Many contributions over the past year have come via the site's researcher John Grant who has done a massive amount of work behind the scenes to trace past pupils and make them aware of the website's existence - many thanks, John I really do appreciate the work that you have put in - long may it continue! As you can see, to mark the website's birthday I have set up a new page which shows a number of links to children's charities, I hope you find these of interest even if you don't feel you can make a donation.Come on then 'children of the 70's'dig deep and lets have a really flourishing website over the coming year that adequately reflects every decade of the school's existence! christheancient@hotmail.co.uk Posted:Aug 11, 2011 - 12:32:57

Chris – Thanks for your comments about school breaks on the tennis courts when the field was wet and muddy. The chaos was caused by multiple games of football. When I arrived in 1958 the main game seems to have been 4th versus the rest, so that would put you in the 4th at that stage. I don’t recall your being involved but as you mentioned elsewhere sport was not your strong point, but I remember Adrian Ellis and ‘Bowdee’ as Body was known, and Robertson and Biss, plus when in the second the 4th was then Stan Hill, Dave Hill, Stuart Ham and a whole lot more. They all had considerably more ‘fire power’ than us 1st formers, but we had the numbers as we were ‘A’ and ‘Alpha’ in that year. Our ploy was to shadow you older boys in a pack and even bring you down if we could, nasty little sprogs we were. It could get a bit rough at times. If we had a game of our own going across the main one we could get wiped out very easily by one of the fast runners. Still we survived. A tennis ball when kicked really hard could go through the fencing which was ok on three sides, but when it went in the orchard, which I think was out of bounds officially, it was hard to find as the grass was usually quite long, so a good spotter was required to give directions so the collector could get back to the tennis court without getting caught. Great fun, except my mother was mortified at how quickly I got through a pair of shoes, she bought me boots with ‘blakeys’ on them for one winter much to my dismay as in the classrooms they were very noisy, well that’s a story for another time, but anyone else who recalls the football on the courts please lets hear your recollections. PS Chris, I really loved reading your memories on one of the other panels, very encouraging and got the grey matter really buzzing.

Edward... The hard tennis courts were put in during my time at the school in the mid-50's. They were put into immediate use at break times if the grass fields were wet or muddy. (If it was pouring with rain, breaks were taken in the appropriate 'form room'. The chaos of a whole school taking a break on the courts needed to be seen to be believed in those days as well! I'm afraid that I can't remember what lengths the breaks were, but they may well have changed after I left anyway.

Chris Marquis Posted:Jun 01, 2011 - 15:07:18

Who remembers playing football on the tennis courts during morning and lunchtime breaks? I do for one, great fun, although mayhem at times with half a dozen games going on simultaneously. When were the tennis courts built? When were us boys given access to the courts, was it just in winter term? Did this last up until the 70’s or beyond? Also how long were break times? I need a little refreshing on these points. A few questions to stimulate sharing our experiences on this great site.

This is a quick hello to let everyone know I am alive and well,as suggested. Who am I? Edward Tincknell from the 'alpha' stream in years 1958-1963. I came across this wonderful site by very random exploration of Google via an entry of a lady with initials JB(several ex pupils with those initials so no one can be embarrassed, not even me). I was really excited to read your guest comments and so much more, and to see the various photographs from that 58-63 era. I have a good memory for names and faces although having only the very briefest of contact with anyone from Sexey's, the last time seeing Susan Stone (from the Wedmore bakery) in about 1970. Given time I hope to fill in some of the question marks in some photo captions. From the Guest book comments subscribers I remember Richard Abraham, David Hill, Alan Vaughan, Chris Marquis (just), Angela Wilshire, Arthur Thompson, and Sally Berrington. I appear in some football and athletics pictures with some or all of those mentioned. A liitle bit more about myself - I lived at Highbridge during school time, moving on to Bristol doing an engineering course at what I believe became Brunel University, and since then have spent my days designing buses, firstly in Bristol and since 1982 in Australia. However in coming to Australia my heart of hearts stayed behind in Somerset, so although family circumstances dont permit me to return permanently I get back as much as possible, and hopefully more often after retiring from work. Now I must avoid rambling, so I will now assist David Hill with names. In Minibus days-the pale green Bedford CF- the first pick up was at Highbridge cemetry with Dinah Jones, Angel Clark, David Waddel, Gareth Jones, and myself. Next stop was next to the level crossing where you got in the front( you were the tallest of us)and the others were Terry Popham, Alana Ward, Margaret James and Lynette Fry. The minibus then stopped for Roger Salter at Watchfield corner. This route allowed the crowded Burnham coach to go left at the A38 and via the back road to Mark causeway after its last pick up point at Burnham Road PO next door to Gail Pharo's house. So much more to enjoy from this site. I am having a slack time at work so am writing from there.Contact me on edward.tincknell@iveco.com.au (dont forget the'c' in Tincknell as most do)

Sherlie - Great to see you in the guest book, I remember you, as I was in the same class as Margaret, please pass on my regards to her. I was in Belize a few years ago (as a tourist) and had interesting time.

Having just read the previous message I posted i realise I had a megga 'senior moment' in saying I'd met up with Vicky in France - in fact it was a uni friend I'd met up with so sincere apologies to Vicky for getting my wires crossed!!

Colours were awarded during my period at the school (1960-67) but not to every member of a team. They were awarded to those who, allegedly, had made an important contribution. As a result you were allowed to wear a different colour tie. As some one who put in more effort on the playing field than the classroom, I was awarded my colours in Football, Cricket and Athletics during the time that Brian Breese was Head of PE

Alan Vaughan Posted:Jan 31, 2011 - 19:58:34

I participated for the school at football, cricket and athletics as I recall, but do not remember anything about school colours or how you were awarded them. I shall blame Pete Lee for not giving me them!!

Dave Hill Posted:Jan 31, 2011 - 11:02:00

Martyn - my sister recently gave me the site address and I have enjoyed having old memories revived. I was at Sexey's from 66 to 72 finishing as Head Girl with David Besley as Head Boy. I trained as a teacher and married before my finals in 76. My husband is an Anglican priest and served 22 years as an army chaplain. Thus we have had an interesting life thet has taken us abroad for half of our postings the most exotic being Belize. We are now retired and live in France. Vicky Alcock and husband retired to France last year and we met up for the first time in years last year and hope to get together again soon. I would like to correct Lesley Moorhouses 'take' on the merit of receiving sports colours. She rather sadly labels me as having received my colours soley on my being the 'favoured one' - how strange! I was, in fact, selected for the county team but as a reserve (one can't always have everything!). I was lucky to be part of a very successful hockey team during my last 3 years at Sexey's and I remember being part of the team that won an inter schools tournament beating Millfield into the bargain!! To conclude, I have very fond memories of school days and will follow the site with interest.

The missing name from the 1966 photo of A Midsummer's Night Dream is, I believe, Alan Grout, also called Wally after the Australian wicketkeeper

Stephanie, My sincere condolences to you and the rest of your family at this very sad time. This news has come as a great shock to me as the last time I interviewed Mervyn for the website was only a few weeks ago and he seemed very well then. Having lived close by in Stolford in the early 1960's Mervyn and I knew a number of the same families and characters and it was a great pleasure speaking to him about them as well as his Sexey's memories at his home on two occasions - in fact his website contribution has only just been posted in the last few days. Mervyn was always very keen to chat about his time at Sexey's and I know he enjoyed his time there. My thoughts and I'm sure the thoughts of all 'Old Sexonians' who knew Mervyn go out to Mary and the rest of the family. Martyn James

It is with great sadness that I would like to let you know that William Mervyn Payne, Mervyn to most of you passed away suddenly and peacefully on 3rd November 2010, aged 83 years. A funeral service will be held at The Parish Church of St. Andrew, Stogursey on Friday 12th November at 2.00pm. Mervyn would have liked for his memories in the 1940’s section to remain on the website because he remembered his time at Sexey's with great fondness. The 54/60 reunion in September was very interesting, we all seemed in fine fettle. Much 'searching' had gone on and we still have a few to find. I did get to see Gail Pharo in April, as she lived near my daughter in East Sussex. She was in good spirits and I had no idea that she would pass away so soon. A lovely welcome from her and her husband at a difficult time. Maybe make the Annual reunion in 2011. Fond regards.

Doug Lockyer, Paul Webber and myself always took the bus in to school together. Paul and his sister also sang with me and Roy Tripp in the Mark Church choir. Its in the 40s-50s here in San Francisco. We almost had snow a few weeks ago. Today it is cold, foggy and somewhat gloomy.

Very hot here in Melbourne today, 43C, will have to go to the beach for a dip after work and then put another shrimp on the barbie!! I think I prefer that to the freezing weather you are enduring in the Old Dart. Martyn - One of my many New Year resolutions is to give you my memories of a boarder's life at Sexeys. I’ve recently been made aware of the sad death of Michael Chew who was a pupil at Sexey’s from 1950 to 1957. This notice appeared in the Weston Mercury – CHEW. - MICHAEL. Passed away suddenly near his home in France on September 1st, 2009 aged 71 years. Much loved father of Jacob, Nathan, Samuel and Clemency. Life will never be the same. Love you always. A Memorial Service will be announced in these pages at a later date. Donations are invited in aid of Médicins Sans Frontières, 64-74 Saffron Hill, London, EC1N 8QX. There is to be a memorial service this coming Saturday (10th) – the following was written by his sister, Jenny - Thank you for your good wishes and thoughts about Mike. Mike's funeral was held in France shortly after his death, but a memorial has been organised by one of his sons for this Saturday 10th October in Weston super Mare. It is being held at Our Lady of Lourdes Church Hall, Baytree Road at 2.30pm. I don't know if you are in contact with any old Sexonians who might be interested but I'm sure they wouId be very welcome. Kind regards Jenny Mackenzie MJ

I've recently been contacted by Neil Gratton who was a pupil at Sexey's during the 70's - (Neil told me)'I had some sad news at the weekend. Jane Rees who taught Geography in my later years at Sexey’s died last week. I don’t have many details apart from the funeral is in Minehead on Thursday. I remember Jane well. Her lessons were always interesting even if they did not stick exactly (or even remotely) to the curriculum. Her tails of her experiences at the 1972 Munich Olympics along with her other travels always enlivened the lessons. It was Jane who fostered my lifelong interest in folk traditions, especially dance as she used to take a group of us off to various folk dance clubs around Somerset. Indeed if it was not for her I would not have got involved in Morris dancing and so would not have met my wife! She is responsible for a lot. A lovely lady. I will miss her.' - Neil

Hi to Melita, thanks for writing down everyone’s name from Alice in Wonderland. I have 6 x 8” photo of myself and Pauline Andrews, as Turtle & Gryphon (looks like a professional took it, maybe a local newspaper took some photo’s?) David Besley, I moved to the states (California) in 87 and then to the East Coast in 2002. You must have been a year behind me?. My memory of Paris, was stuffing myself with waffles from a stand near the Eiffel Tower. Michael Williams, were we in the same class? I see you also live in the States. Perhaps we need a State Side reunion of Old Sexonian’s! Amanda Cousins, I remember your Dad, please pass on my regards. Very sorry to say that Peter Atkinson died suddenly last week. Pete came from Draycott and he and I travelled to Sexeys from 1958 to 1963 (possibly 1965 if Pete stayed on for A Levels) on Bert Banwell's coach which was usually drievn by Vern Day. Sadly I lost touch with Pete a great many years ago but his parents still live in Draycott as does my Mother. She and Pete's Mother went to Draycott School together in the 1920's, so our lives were closely connected from the very beginning. Richard

Very odd I just got the same message as you. I have got mail from David Fear who I have just told about this site so its all beyond me. I was going to say the last time I saw Eggo was in London in the mid sixties when he was in the Metropolitan Police. Not the first person I thought of as a policeman. Also the names I mentioned were in the same form as me and were in a few of the photos on site. Stan Hill for example was the senior school goalkeeper for a few years and Gail was the attractive blond girl in some of the tennis piccies. Apologies Gail if you read this - meant as a compliment. If you do not recall the names suspect we were in different years, here are a few more I recall - Head Boy Les Skidmore, in my year Howard Burridge, Keith Ham or Lamb, David (Dicky) Fear, Veronica Gibson, Susan Dean, John Ives,Stuart Ham or Lamb, Jennifer Mason Putt, Pamela ???(from Shipham). I used to get the bus from Highbridge got on with Terry popham who was a year younger than me and Christine ??? who was possibly two years younger. I also recognise some faces in the photos but the names have gone. Dave

Hi Dave. I was there at about the same time, but I can't recollect your name and the others that you mention. Though... I do remember Eggo! He and I were quite good friends for quite a while and used to go train spotting - either at Yatton or the north junction outside Weston. His Mum used to run the greengrocers' shop in Tweentown in Cheddar and always topped up our lunch boxes (quite well) with her best Granny Smith apples. I was also one of the 'secret smokers'. I've given up (several times) since - and for quite long periods. Shamefully, I still enjoy the occasional smoke, though. I'm on the.old.schoolboy@o2.co.uk

Had a long look last night, recognise quite a few faces. I was in the school senior football team in probably 59/60, used to have a picture but I think it got lost when my mother died. Remember Robert Hector, Stan Hill, John Ives and ??? Bell were in that team. Does anyone remember Raymond "Eggo" Page, spent his life behind the woodpile smoking. Very fond memories of Pete Lee, I think he was the only teacher I have ever related to. I also remember him being on TV in a quiz with his kids. If anyone remembers me and would like to get in touch I would love to hear from them, my address is davidlhill@talktalk.net

Just come across your site - fascinating. Recognise a few faces, will return for a longer look when I have more time. I was at Sexey's from around late 57 to the end of 60.

My email address is dbesley@sbcglobal.net. It has been a great delight for me to look through the website and remember the"old days". Does anyone remember the school trip to Paris at Easter 1968 - which happened to be the time when the Parisian students were rioting?

David - thanks for writing in, you were in the class below me.If you would like to state your email address on any future correspondence then people can get in touch 'properly' as opposed to leaving a message in the Guest Book.I'm afraid Basil is no longer with us but I can't give you any details - he was a great teacher and certainly injected fun into his Latin lessons!Martyn

Its a quiet afternoon here and I am sitting at my desk and I found myself thinking back to the days at Sexey's. I was there from 1965-72. For those that remember me I went on to Med School in London where I practised for 12 years. Then in 1989 I moved to California and now practice just outside of San Francisco. If anyone would like to make contact please do so. BTW - Does anyone remember Basil Moore (latin teacher). Is he still around? David Besley

Pat - I'm glad the site brought back some enjoyable memories for you and it would be nice if more pupils from the 40's wrote in. If you have any personal memories please send them into me on the site's email address, it would be great to know what the pupils of the war years got up to! Best Wishes, Martyn

I so enjoyed reading all this and looking at the photographs trying to identify people I knew. More please - especially comments from those who attended the school around 1942-45. We didn't write offensive graffiti or beat up old ladies, how did we enjoy ourselves?!

Michael -it's always great to welcome new arrivals to the website particularly when they live abroad and have probably broken their ties with school and schoolfriends. I dont recognise your name but it looks like you were in 'Mousey's' and'Pokeys' form - one above mine. Please email me on the site's email address as I'm sure you must have some memories that we could add! Martyn

It was with some astonishment that I found this Website; I had just Googled the school to see if there was any mention of it, and voila! everything one could hope for. How would I join the "old sexonians, or is being a past pupil enough? I was a proud pupil from '63 to '69. I now live in the States.

Arthur. Thanks for the update (and reading my 'memoirs'). Maybe it was a different cider trip that I'm remembering - the one I was on was a freebie - but somebody did get sick on that one. But was it you? I remember the motor bike bit. We were all told that it could be serious, the loss of a kidney as there would only be one left! But I'm glad that it didn't affect youo that badly. Chris

Chris Marquis Posted:Feb 22, 2009 - 17:39:14

Chris, I see I get two mentions, the trip for Cider, it was a reward for David Jones for helping with haymaking and was a one off, more detail, we all put money in a pot and the one who drunk the most got it, ME, and yes I was sick, and I wasn't that drunk on the coach. NO having my kidney out was not that serious even in "those days", I was walking the hospital grounds in my own clothes after a week.

Martin - that pool was so cold and you had to get in. I recall Miss Podmore the spinster cookery teacher and the annual visit to Popes camp. The Saturday night Barn Dances at the school, and sadly a pupil being killed on the way too school, Russell Price. I have lots of photos I will scan and send them to you. Do you have a direct email address please.

Julie Fido Posted:Jan 14, 2009 - 13:29:35

Thanks Martyn. I have remembered some more teachers that were at Sexeys. Miss Button (biology) is I think now retired, and Mrs Westby (lab technician) who retired about 10 years ago. Both were at Kings. Mr Skidmore (maths) retired about 10 years ago, but sadly no longer with us. As for the pool, it wasnt heated when I was there. It was so cold, even on a warm day !!

For those who dont know me, Im Tony and Lyn cousins daughter. I went to Sexey's in the early 90's. Hubert and Mrs Hares (school secretery) were still there. It's fascinating to look back and put faces to names that Mum and Dad have talked about. Sexey's has changed so much, and I suspect that it's changed since I was there. I went on to Kings of Wessex, where Mr Thomas (games master) and Mr Elvins (history) were teaching. both teacher's remembered Mum and Dad !! Sadley Mr Elvins is no longer with us, and Mr Thomas is retired. Martyn I would like to say how fab this site is, and Ive had fun looking back at "the good old days !!". Mandy

Just stumbled across the site. And what memories have flooded back by visiting it. I was there in the mid-50's until 1961 and so many of the events ring a bell (or bells!). Many of the staff names are very familiar - though I notice that some are missing. Browsing through I recognise a couple of pupil's names and one picture (which will remain nameless brought back strong memories of a particular young lady. (In my sweet innocence(?) of youth, I was never able to let her now what I really felt, though). About four years ago, I had the opportunity to look back at the school and see how little, in looks, it has changed. My mind certainly wandered around the snaking corridor and up into what was, then, the 6th form common room upstairs. Luckily, I now live a lot nearer in Bristol and can look more often when I feel the need. Good luck with the site; and I shall, of course, keep popping back in for a look.

I attended Sexey`s School 1944-1948. I was very pleased when my friend Joy Morse nee Tinney told me about this website. It would be good to hear of others we knew at that time. I am married with 3 daughters, 6 Grandchildren and 3+half Great Grandchildren. I now have lived in Bristol since 1949 when I came to do nursing. I might be interested in a reunion next year if Joy is agreeable to come with me. It`s an excellent website with so much information. Good luck
